RAIL GARANT wins tender for a right to operate sea container terminal
24/05/11On March 8, the Tallinn Sea Port Board accepted the offer made by Rail Garant Group to develop a new terminal in the Muuga Sea Port as the best of all submitted offers, the Port press service reports.
The ice-free harbor of Muuga can take ocean class container vessels. The projected terminal capacity will be 360,000 TEU annually. The exact investment amount will be defined at the design phase which Rail Garant plans to commence soon. Rail Garant intends to operate the terminal in two key areas: Reloading tank-containers with chemical cargos The annual volume of foreign trade tank-container shipments along Russia-EU routes is approaching TEU 100,000. Spectransgarant, a member of Rail Garant Group, is Russia’s largest tank-container operator. Together with the largest European carrier, the Group is getting ready to launch the project for servicing a soaring tank-container flow from EU countries to Russia and back. The new Muuga terminal will play a key role in this project as many Russian ports are unwilling to work with tank-containers and dangerous shipments. Making up for the expected shortage of port capacities According to our estimates, a shortage of stevedoring facilities is expected in the Russian Baltic Sea ports in 3-5 years due to ever-growing container freight flow. In view of the almost equal tariff rates, the Group intends to forward additional export shipments of its largest customers through the Muuga terminal. Rail Garant is one of Russia’s largest rail rolling stock operators owning the total fleet of 20,000 cars where gondola cars and tank-cars have a material share. Besides, Rail Garant owns a large tank-container and container platform fleet used for carrying bulk containers and operates several container sites in Russian industrial cities. “Operating our own container terminal with prime location will be a final phase in generating the required service package to provide to loyal and future customers,” Rail Garant CEOs believe |
